Traveling back in time with Emo Night Brooklyn

When the two buddies Ethan and Alex decided to throw a party in Brooklyn only playing their favorite emo music, they had no idea that this was just the beginning of an event series making marks around the globe. It was the beginning of Emo Night Brooklyn a nostalgic party series bringing back memories and music from the good old emo days when jeans were tight and bands like Blink 182, My Chemical Romance and Co. were the only CD's you had. I talked to Ethan about the beginning of Emo Night, why they decided to expand and what the future holds for their project.

When you get goosebumps and flashbacks to an amazing time while listening to Yellowcard, Blink 182, Dashboard Confessionals and many more THIS is the party for you. So check it out.

Hey Ethan. Thanks for taking your time for the interview. For all the people who don't know anything about "Emo Night": What would you say it is?

Emo Night Brooklyn is a DJ based party that celebrates the best of emo and pop-punk music. It is a place for people who love alternative music to rock out, dance and sing along to all the music they grew up loving and still love today. Often times we will even invite artists from the genre to either perform their songs or DJ their favorite music in the genre. Some artists we have had include Ryan Key (Yellowcard), New Found Glory, Andrew WK, Bayside, State Champs, Jack Barakat (All Time Low) and many more. We travel around the USA in about 40 different cities and recently started doing events internationally in Berlin and London.

"We noticed there really wasn’t a good bar or club we could go to that played all the music we loved"

So how did it all start? What is the story behind Emo Night?

My best friend and co-founder Alex and I grew up in London together. We went to tons of shows in London, since there were always amazing bands coming through. On the weekends, if there wasn’t a good show going on, we would have some epic pregames with friends, blasting our favorite music, drinking beers and rocking out. We both went to college in Boston and continued the party in our dorm rooms, and eventually over to Brooklyn, NY after college in our apartments. We noticed there really wasn’t a good bar or club we could go to that played all the music we loved – usually bars will just play top 40, electronic or hip hop music, so we decided to take matters into our own hands. We approached a bar across from Alex’s apartment in Brooklyn and asked if we could throw a party that we DJ’d in return for free beer (our main motivation!) The party was in a small 100 person basement. The night became a huge success, hundreds of people lined up to try to get into this basement and it ended up being one of the best nights of our lives. People were moshing, singing along to all of their favorite songs as if they were at a show. Over the past four years, we have upgraded into bigger venues, started traveling all over the country and now internationally. We’ve upped our production game and also started inviting some of our favorite artists to party with us. It’s been a truly amazing journey and we can’t believe it’s come this far.

Why did you decide to come to Berlin & London?

London was where it all started, so we had some connections there and it was a good opportunity to bring the party back home with us. We knew Berlin is one of the biggest party cities in the world, with many people loving hard rock, metal, and alternative music, so we thought it would be a perfect place to expand to in Europe. We’ve now made some awesome friends here that help us put on the show and are stoked to keep it going.

Will it become a regular thing here in Berlin?

That’s the plan! We would love to throw regular shows here – we’ve had an incredible time and everyone has been so welcoming.

"We’d love the opportunity to share this amazing party with more people"

Do you guys have plans to expand even further into new cities or countries?

That would really be a dream, yes. It’s always a blast to enter new countries, experience a new culture and get their take on the alternative scene. We’d love the opportunity to share this amazing party with more people.

Are you guys always traveling with to every gig or is it more like a franchise here?

So far we have traveled personally to Berlin to each party, with our third show on October 12th, which I’m excited to be at. If it continues to be successful we plan on continuing this trend!

How big is your crew behind the whole project?

We couldn’t have done this without the help of an amazing crew. We currently work with two booking agents who help us set up the shows and give us great advice. We have a marketing team that helps, as well as photographers, event staff, merch sellers and more. It’s a lot of work, but we have so much fun doing it.

How was the feedback from the parties in Berlin so far?

Absolutely amazing. Berlin has been one of the wildest cities, so we are excited to continue to grow here!
